Carnelian Charm

It was the summer of 1940 when the Hacker Boat Company delivered Tahoe’s venerable Thunderbird Yacht to Mayfield’s Boatyard, now the Tahoe City Marina. Commissioned by George Whittell and to be housed at his private east shore lakefront estate, the Thunderbird was designed by famed naval architect John L. Hacker. Enamored by the lines of his DC-2 aircraft, also named “Thunderbird,"  the millionaire requested that the hull and cockpit of his new speedboat resemble the fuselage of his personal airplane. The Thunderbird Yacht continues to grace the crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe to this day, a living reminder of the storied history we have here at Tahoe.

The Lake is home to an incredible legacy of history, from Ansel Adams and John Muir to Sinatra and Henry Kaiser, cherished memories appreciated by generations of families. This history is beautifully enjoyed and embodied in the Old Tahoe homes and wooden boats that still dot the shores of the Lake, a living reminder of the hands and stories that have crafted Lake Tahoe’s history.

One of these homes, 3970 North Lake Blvd., affectionately known as “Carnelian Charm,” built in the same year that the Thunderbird came to make its mark on Lake Tahoe, is now available for purchase. Lovingly maintained, and cared for throughout the decades, this lakefront cabin exudes charm, a timeless classic harkening to the simpler times at Tahoe.

Sold furnished, the home enjoys many updated features with two large lakeside decks, two bedrooms upstairs and two down, with a bathroom on each level.  An Old-Tahoe cabin in character, the home has been updated to enjoy many modern conveniences with Lutron lighting, beautiful landscaping with terraced gardens, a lakeside lawn, and remodeled kitchen and bathrooms. The home enjoys a one-car garage with epoxy floors, a bonus recreation room with full bathroom above, and game room with additional full bath below for a total of 4 bedrooms, two bonus rooms, and 4.5 bathrooms. A hand built craftsman gas fireplace with semi-precious stones inset into the hearth in the living room completes this special offering. The lakeside outdoor spa will be an ideal location from which to watch Thunderbird as she traverses across the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

With two buoys, and 50 feet of beach frontage, this lakefront cabin on Carnelian Bay offers a charming timeless opportunity to own your very own slice of Lake Tahoe history. Become a part of Tahoe’s history from this cabin, today, offered furnished and ready for your immediate enjoyment.

Chambers Landing Residence 8

Chambers Landing, the beautiful site of 43 condominium residences situated in a gated 14-acre property on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, has a story steeped in Tahoe’s wild west history. It was during the mid-1800’s when “Old John” Washington McKinney explored the western shores of Tahoe and chose this site for his hunting and fishing resort,“Hunter’s Retreat.”  His resort would consist of a main hotel with dining hall, twenty-five log cabins and numerous tents for the more adventurous guests. Mark Twain stayed at the resort throughout the seasons during his forays at Lake Tahoe. “Old John” offered sailing and fishing activities on the Lake as well as guided hunting trips into the forests beyond. He also constructed one of the first boathouses at Lake Tahoe, built in 1875, which doubled as a bar and clubhouse. Today, this well known watering hole is known as the Chambers Landing Bar & Restaurant, drawing customers from “land and sea” to indulge in their signature drink on the Lake. All summer long avid patrons line the docks to participate in this seasonal ritual as did their forefathers aboard the “Steamer Tahoe.” Chambers Landing, steeped in tradition and history, can now be a part of your family story as well.

Residence Eight, elegantly designed and decorated to the highest degree of finish and craftsmanship, is offered to the market for the first time in nearly 20 years. Remodeled down to the studs in 2004, while still retaining its old-world charm, offering 4 bedrooms all en-suite, 4.5 bathrooms with views of Lake Tahoe, this residence is located on the meadow surrounded by towering pines, just steps to the Lake, beach, the bar, restaurant, fitness center, tennis, and pool. The residence has a dedicated buoy with private pier and boat valet for homeowners. Nearby market and restaurants offer all you need. Arrive at your Tahoe home, and never get in your car while you're here!

Enter on the main level where a grand entryway welcomes you home. The expansive living room with a stunning stone hearth of a wood-burning fireplace centers the room, the meadow and lake beyond, inviting with its adventures. The open concept living room  with skylights features a thoughtfully designed chef’s kitchen with Wolf range and double ovens, Cambria Quartz countertops and wine fridge. Adjacent, one finds an office, reading nook, and powder room for a fun, genial entertainment space. Reclaimed wood floors throughout the home imbue a warm comfortable setting. A sliding glass door opens from the dining area to a lakeside deck for outdoor entertaining. A beautiful handcrafted spiral staircase leads to a charming en-suite guest bedroom above. The wrought-iron railings in the home were crafted by local artisans. Downstairs, one finds three additional en-suite bedrooms, situated for maximum privacy. The Master Suite, and Junior Suite both have separate private sliding glass doors to the meadow and lake beyond. The Master features a large double vanity bathroom with granite counter tops, and a sunken tiled shower with a window for additional light. Tastefully and elegantly remodeled to today’s traditional mountain aesthetic, with charming nuances to each room, this beautiful residence in Chambers Landing invites you and your friends and family to begin your legacy on Lake Tahoe.

As John Washington McKinney envisioned for his resort, Chambers Landing today offers an incredible respite away from the world, one that celebrates the legacy of the west shore of Lake Tahoe on its 14 acres, with a private pier and beach and dedicated buoy for each homeowner. Tennis, a swimming pool, fitness facility, on-site restaurant, and bar complete the offering. Recreational opportunities abound with close proximity to Emerald Bay, McKinney Creek, Sugar Pine State Park, Homewood Mountain Resort, the McKinney Rubicon trail, El Dorado National Forest, Desolation Wilderness, and more. The adventures just minutes from Chambers Landing are endless. A wonderful slice of Lake Tahoe history awaits you.

Mountain Luxury on Lake Tahoe

Summer Camp for the whole family at Lake Tahoe! Residence 21 is the lakefront condominium you've been looking for, featuring 4 bedroom suites, each with private bath with heated floors, a family room with sleeping alcove boasting 4 Pullman style bunks, and 5.5 baths. Custom features include beautiful reclaimed barnwood floors, custom cabinetry and chef’s kitchen with a wonderful coffee nook, honed granite countertops, a custom hammered copper range hood over wolf range, beverage cooler, two kitchen sinks, a wet bar with wine cooler, a stunning spa room, dedicated laundry room, and a deck off the kitchen with steps down onto the secluded meadow setting and to the Lake beyond.

Anchoring the living room is a stone hearth with a mantle created from the rib a whaling ship dating back to the early 1800’s, recently found buried under San Francisco, a legacy piece with an incredible history. The ship was discovered in 2005 when developers began to excavate and conduct their studies for the site of the Rincon Tower in San Francisco. Numerous archeological finds were discovered, however chief amongst them were the remnants of a three-masted 100-foot ship. Analysis determined the ship to be the “CANDACE,” built in 1818 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Candace was a trading and whaling vessel, and is purported to have been one of the first American flag merchant ships to trade in the Pacific. On its last voyage, the Candace was badly damaged by the ice pack in the Arctic, and came limping into the San Francisco Bay on July 4, 1855, 165 years ago today.

The Candace never sailed again and joined the hundreds of ships abandoned in the Bay due to the Gold Rush to the Sierra Nevadas, when ships had arrived in San Francisco transporting gold seekers, and could not leave without a crew or passengers to return with. The waterfront was referred to as a "forest of masts,"  clogged with abandoned tall-masted sailing ships. The Candace and countless other ships of the Gold Rush era, were partly dismantled and eventually buried under the growing new city -- forgotten for nearly 150 years, until now.

It was at this same time that Lake Tahoe saw considerable development and impact due to the gold and silver rushes of the 1800’s. In 1861 Chambers Landing was settled by “Old John” Washington McKinney, established as the site of a hunting and fishing resort known as “Hunter’s Retreat.” The resort would consist of a main hotel with dining hall, twenty-five log cabins and numerous tents for the more adventurous guests. “Old John” offered sailing and fishing activities on the Lake as well as guided hunting trips into the forests beyond. He also constructed one of the first boathouses at Lake Tahoe, built in 1875, which doubled as a bar and clubhouse. The original pier stands today, a historical monument, and home to Chambers Landing’s infamous pier bar with its “Chambers Punches,” drawing customers by land and by water to indulge.

This property offers you and your family the opportunity to escape to Tahoe, and make California’s history a part of your family legacy at Lake Tahoe. Chambers Landing offers a private pier, sandy beach, dedicated buoy for each homeowner, tennis, a swimming pool, fitness center, on-site restaurant and bar.

SUN, SKI, SWIM on Lake Tahoe

Chambers Landing, the beautiful site of 43 condominium residences situated on a gated 14-acre property on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, has a story steeped in Tahoe’s wild west history. Today, this well known watering hole is known as the Chambers Landing Bar & Restaurant, drawing customers from “land and sea” to indulge in their signature drink, a “Chamber’s Punch.” All summer long avid patrons line the docks to participate in this seasonal ritual as did their forefathers aboard the “Steamer Tahoe.” Chambers Landing, steeped in tradition and history, can now be part of your family story as well.

Residence Twenty Two, with 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a large den with wet bar, and covered parking is located on the lakefront within Chambers Landing with gorgeous lake views from every level. The residence is elegantly decorated to the highest degree of detail throughout.

Enter on the main level where the expansive living room welcomes your first view, the stunning stone hearth of the wood-burning fireplace centers the room, reclaimed “Historic Heart Pine”  floors connect the dining area, breakfast nook, and chef’s kitchen, with shimmering Lake Tahoe beyond.  A sliding glass door opens from the dining area to a lakeside deck for outdoor entertaining. Another opens to a side deck from the breakfast nook to the outdoor grill with stairs  to access the common areas and lake beyond. A guest bedroom, full bath, and well-appointed spa room complete this level.

The custom staircase leads to an additional guest bedroom with full bath, laundry, and the Master Suite upstairs. Watch the sun rise from the east over Lake Tahoe as your fireplace radiates warmth to fill the room. A large walk in closet, double vanity sinks, marble floors and granite shower and tub complete the Master Bedroom offering.

A spacious den/media room with wet bar, large stone gas fireplace and full bath are tucked downstairs below the main living area, while upstairs above the master suite level, a charming tree-house lofted bedroom adds a playful retreat with full bath and beautiful lake views.

As John Washington McKinney envisioned for his resort, Chambers Landing today offers an incredible respite away from the world, one that celebrates the legacy of the west shore of Lake Tahoe, with a private pier and beach and dedicated buoy for each homeowner. Tennis, a swimming pool, exercise facility, on-site restaurant, and bar complete the offering. A little slice of Lake Tahoe history is yours for the taking.

Concierge Living at Lake Tahoe

Over three-quarters of a century ago, these lush landscaped grounds on Lake Tahoe provided the perfect setting from which wealthy industrialist Henry Kaiser would lavishly entertain his contemporaries from around the world. After dining upon a sumptuous luncheon at his personal yacht club, guests would line the seawall to witness feats of skill and daring as Kaiser and his friends raced their slick mahogany crafts along the shores of the lake. And although the roar of their V12 engines is now but a faint echo against the walls of nearby Blackwood Canyon, “Fleur du Lac,” Kaiser’s Flower of the Lake, named after one of his favorite boats, remains a notable and much sought after address.

Today, this gated 15-acre lakefront enclave has been beautifully restored beyond its original grandeur and is now home to only 22 luxurious residences, each as unique and individual as its owner. Ownership privileges include the use of two tennis courts, exercise facility with locker room and steam showers, private beach, heated pool with outdoor spa, the Boathouse and Yacht Club, the Kaiser Suite guest apartment, outdoor terrace, bocce court, chauffeur services, and private marina with your personal boat slip, all complimented by on-site concierge management.

Enjoying one of the premier locations within Fleur du Lac Estates, this distinct 4200+ square-foot residence is perfectly positioned to capture the daily interaction of dramatic water and mountain vistas. Originally the property developer’s personal residence, Fleur du Lac Residence Twenty is offered furnished and decorated for your immediate use and enjoyment. The foyer sets the tone for the remarkable level of craftsmanship and detail you will find throughout this fine home.  Your primary living and entertainment areas are situated on the entry level with emphasis upon a towering stone hearth and a living mural of Lake and mountain scenery beyond. The library/media room with its own fireplace offers a more intimate setting, while the well equipped wet bar is certain to attract its share of interest. A pass-through door connects the primary living areas with the gourmet island kitchen where you will find polished granite counters, generous amounts of cabinet storage, sub-zero refrigeration, double ovens, a six burner range, and many other fine appointments; the breakfast nook is lakeside with direct access to the beach and the waters of Lake Tahoe. The laundry area is conveniently located nearby between the kitchen and attached garage.

Take the staircase off the foyer to access all four bedroom suites upstairs; the central hall with its mahogany banister is bathed with natural light from the cupola above. The master suite with incredible southern lake views is captivating, a sanctuary from which you will wake to endless views across Tahoe’s sparkling waters. All four suites are beautifully proportioned with individualized decor, and luxurious private baths. Two of the suites enjoy the ambiance of fireplaces set in custom stone hearths.

Fleur Du Lac Estates, conveniently situated to airports serving both commercial and private jet aircraft, is certain to be your destination of choice at Lake Tahoe, America’s four season playground in the high Sierras. This is the lifestyle change you have been looking for and is available at $5,500,000 furnished and decorated.
